Schroer finds positive features in Proverbs. In response to those who suggest that personified Wisdom serves as a figure to bind women into a patriarchal system she points out the significance of the fact that Wisdom 44 45 46 47 48 never appears as a motherly figure, the crucial role for women from a patriarchal perspective. Simundson suggests that ‘the lament gives the sufferer words to use, a way of bringing into the open what is difficult to express, so that it may be acknowledged and worked through in some meaningful process’. Fingarette concludes his Mapping Responsibility with a chapter on Job. Nemo focuses on Job in his Job and the Excess of Evil. One hopes that we will see a great expansion of such interdisciplinary work. 113 114 115 116 117 118 Conclusion The sheer mass of publications on Old Testament wisdom requires a map with which to navigate it, and my hope is that approaching the subject through a series of turns is illuminating. The postmodern turn is, in my opinion, running out of steam and a danger is that we will relapse into historical criticism and virulent forms of secular readings.
