Buying four new pieces would have been beyond our budget, as would recovering four stock pieces in Naugahydem. Though vinyl would have cost less, using it would have limited the designer's color choices and might have been quite troublesome for me, an inexperienced upholsterer. Thus, in the end we adopted Michael Yeargan's suggestion that muslin could be painted and finished to look exactly like Naugahydeo - from an audience's vantage point anyway. The technique is quite simple and for us was cost-effective enough that we were able to afford two good sofas and two solid chairs in a hotel liquidation sale.
