For any specific product, flash and fire points will vary depending on the apparatus and the heating rate. Temperatures are raised in 5ЊF increments for this test. 5 Cleveland open cup flash tester. Copyright 2001 by Exxon Mobil Corporation. All Rights Reserved. The flash point of new oils varies with viscosity: higher viscosity oils have higher flash points. Flash points are also affected by the type of crude and by the refining process. For example, naphthenic oils generally have lower flash points than paraffinic oils of similar viscosity.

PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL CHARACTERISTICS A multitude of physical and chemical tests yield useful information on the characteristics of lubricating oils. However, the quality or the performance features of a lubricant cannot be adequately described on the basis of physical and chemical tests alone. Thus, major purchasers of lubricating oils, such as the military, equipment builders, and many commercial consumers, include performance tests as well as physical and chemical tests in their purchase specifications.

Detergents and dispersants in the oil can delay the formation of deposits and reduce the rate at which they accumulate on metal surfaces. An essential factor with this approach is regular draining and replacement of the oil so that the contaminants in it are removed from the engine before the oil’s capacity to hold them is exceeded. Detergents are generally considered to be chemical compounds that chemically neutralize deposit precursors that form under high temperature conditions or as the result of burning fuels with high sulfur content or other materials that form acidic combustion byproducts.
