Most farmers thought we were harmless. They figured if they had a hard time getting deer with a gun, how could we ever get them with a bow? Plus, we were only looking for big bucks. Everyone let us come in and have the run of their place as long as we didn’t do any drives, and didn’t bring in other hunters during gun season. Before long we were down in Buffalo County every spring looking for shed antlers, so we learned a lot about the area. We spent a lot of time trying to learn how these bucks move around all these bluffs and valleys.

That’s the best way to keep hunters happy while getting them to work with your long-term goals. I remind them that they only have one tag, but their odds of getting a truly big buck are greater here than anywhere else they’re likely to bowhunt. But even though they have a 70 percent of getting a shot at a P&Y buck while they’re here, some guys will shoot that 2½-yearold buck. A Pope & Young score means nothing to them. That 2½-year-old buck is a trophy to them. I don’t get upset because it doesn’t happen enough to affect our overall herd-management plan.

We not only show photos of Booners, we show them examples of 2½-year-old bucks. Most of these bucks average 115 to 125 inches on the Pope & Young scale. A few might gross-score more than that, but most won’t net P&Y until they’re carrying their third set of antlers. Our 3½- year-old bucks have average gross scores in the 130s and up. The author doesn’t believe in shaming bowhunters into holding out for a big buck. Instead, he shows them recent photos and videotape of bucks still roaming the area.
