An environmentally “full earth” will require, for the first time, that the root systemic causes of poverty be addressed much more directly. The alternative of global environmental collapse would not be pleasant for anyone, rich or poor. In many parts of the world, desperately poor people who lack either an available environmental frontier or the financial means to protect their existing natural resource base are resorting to acts of deforestation, overgrazing, overfishing, and industrial spoilage.

To these strains on the global ecosystem are added the even more significant environmental damage of the world’s affluent and their insatiable throw-away consumerism and run-away fossil fuel demands.
