By and large, Canada has communities of monolingual English speakers and monolingual French speakers. Further, looking only at the 'official' languages we would fail to note the many bilingual communities that do exist in Canada, that is the so-called heritage language communities where either English or French is the second language. Another problem with starting with the nation is of course that language boundaries and national boundaries quite often do not coincide (Macedonian).
