In these works central religious questions dominate, above all the issue of the justice of God. That, in fact, was Aeschylus' invention. Needless to say, none of the four main lines of argument that Socrates avails himself of succeeds in establishing the immortality of the soul, or in demonstrating that disembodied souls enjoy lives of thought and intelligence. Because Aeschylus' Agamemnon (458 BCE) appears to call for such a revelation, the ekkyklema probably came into use during the first half of the fifth century BCE, which makes it one of the earliest special effects on record.

The universe, though, is a continual play of elements separating and combining. We can see here the influence of Pythagorean thought upon Plato since this also leaves room for the transmigration of souls. Jobs included wool buying, then cleaning, carding, spinning, weaving and dyeing it; making garments for the entire household. But just as in the case of the Mystery and the Morality, the Interlude developed out of the Morality, and the two cannot always be distinguished, some single plays being distinctly described by the authors as 'Moral Interludes.' In the Interludes the realism of the Moralities became still more pronounced, so that the typical Interlude is nothing more than a coarse farce, with no pretense at religious or ethical meaning.
